A Northwest Coast Basketry Hat, Haida Tribe, Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, circa 1870s.

Superbly woven spruce root is masterfully painted with native pigments. Attributed to "The Master of the Chicago Settee" as the probable artist by Bill Holm, Curator Emeritus of the Burke Museum in Seattle, the work depicts the stylized formlines creating a mythical "Sea Grizzly" and a humanoid face mask.
